Title : This One Summer
Author : Mariko Tamaki
Illustrator : Jillian Tamaki
Publisher : First Second Books
This novel is about a young girl Rose. Every summer Rose and
her family goes away to a small beach town, where Rose gets to spend two weeks
with her younger friend Wendy. Rose is a bit older and affected by the troubled
marriage of her parents, whose constant fighting has turned their usually
peaceful summer getaway into a less idyllic one. Her friend Windy is like a younger sister she never had who is sometimes
boring, but she has a sound instinct. Rose is infatuated with the town’s older
teens, especially with the local, convenience store clerk. When Rose and Windy
try to look for a distraction from her parents’ daily drama, they find
themselves in trouble. The novel beautifully portrays the emotions and psychology of two girls on the cusps of adolescence. The book is printed in somber blue ink, the
illustrations are powerful. It has a detailed background and stunning two-page
work throughout the book which beautifully sets the mood and a sense of belonging to the place.
